COMMISSIONS
What to expect:
After initial enquiry you will be contacted either by myself or a colleague by email to ask for specific details and scope of the project
From this we will schedule a conversation which will identify the type of project, and the best way we can help.
Each project is completely different, and the progression from this point will depend on whether you are a private individual or a heritage institution.
Process outlined
- We design for place.
- Sympathetic and collaborative discussions about why, where and when.
- Always listening to the client’s backstory and the reasons for commissioning.
- We listen to ideas and desires before making suggestions.
- We have a conversation. I listen.
- We talk about who is funding the project and the expectations of the funder/stakeholder.
- We negotiate a deliverable schedule of work that is achievable and timely
- Budgets are discussed openly with realistic expectations and transparent considerations.
- Materials are suggested, and samples are arranged so the client makes an informed decision, which will result in the carving of a beautiful, resilient sculpture that meets and often exceeds the client’s expectations.
- Communication is clear and scheduled.
- Designs are reviewed and agreed upon with the client being fully informed of any necessary changes.
- Models and maquettes are made so the client can see exactly what they commission.
- At this point, the commission is agreed upon, and a contract is entered into.
- Management of schedules is clear and consistent
- Payment transparency and scheduled billing.
- The first stage payment is for the commissioning contract and one-third of the budget. This is payable after the initial consultation and two rounds of design review. It is imperative that the client is happy with the design at this stage. This payment buys materials like stone and pays for the evolution of the design and, where necessary, maquette making and development.
- The next payment is halfway through the project. This is negotiable and will be agreed upon once the contract has been agreed upon.
- The third is approximately one week before installation. This pays for logistics and additional labour.
