Joan of Arc

NINA BILBEY MASTER CARVER

Polychromed Terra Cotta

I have been making allegorical figures for many years but an enforced period of isolation during lockdown created a liminal space allowing me to explore personal themes of isolation and invisibility often experienced by women in later life.

Often referred to as the militant’s woman’s “ideal” Joans of Arcs, life and legend made her a patron saint for the suffragists. A perfect catalyst for this powerful sculpture that has become a very personal and transformative theme.
